Music

Our work in this area

We’re especially pleased when asked to work for businesses in the music sector and have been involved in this sector for many years….perhaps since the incorporation of the Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra or the sale of songs to Michael Jackson in the late 1980’s.

Music organisations, like all others, will require company law services when considering what legal form the business should take. If charitable in character the registration of the organisation with the Charity Commission may be appropriate. For amateur organisations the use of a company limited by guarantee is a popular choice. Larger commercial organisations, such as a manufacturer, may well require ownership terms to be recorded between members, perhaps using an LLP agreement or MBO type articles of association with complex rights and rules around raising capital, disposing of shares and responding to a takeover or sale.

The business whether orchestra, band, performer, studio, manufacturer or retailer is likely to wish to contract with a plethora of third parties for which our extensive experience with commercial contracts will come in handy, such as trade terms, outsourcing, manufacturing, copyright and licensing.

Whatever your needs as a music business or organisation please get in touch and make use of our expertise: contact us today by calling 0845 094 9000 or email chris.muris@altmorebusinesslaw.com and we will get back to you right away.

Premier Music International, established in 1922, is one of the world’s leading brands in the design, manufacture, distribution and sale of drums and other percussion instruments. Major names in military, marching, traditional and rock bands use our products as do many symphonic orchestras. During its most recent redevelopment stage, Premier required the skills and expertise of a solid/experienced solicitor to assist in a whole range of legal work, namely: shareholder and LLP agreements; loans and debentures; intellectual property matters; various commercial agreements, i.e. dealer, distribution, endorser, tooling agreements – the list continues to grow. Altmore Business Law was chosen because of location and the personal hands on service offered by a small friendly firm. The good fortune is all ours! Ken Tonkin, owner

We are an international brand going back to 1948 with business and consumer customers throughout the world. Customers trade with us via the website, over the phone and face to face in our shops and at shows. We required updated and comprehensive B2B and B2C terms of sale and service for use with our new website. We chose Chris Muris at Altmore Business Law for his adaptability and the ease with which he approached and understood our needs. As a musician he also had previous knowledge and understanding of our business. As a specialist musical instrument manufacturer and retailer, there are many aspects of our business which are unique and needed special consideration when refreshing our business terms to ensure that they remained reasonable for both us and our customers whilst being legalChris thoroughly studied our existing terms and advised what was already suitable and which areas needed developing. He also listened and asked lots of questions about how we do business. Chris created a map of which policies we needed and systematically worked through them with us. Breaking the terms down into sections made the process much more manageable. The end result is a thorough but approachable set of terms we can use with our business and consumer clients according to the purchase channel used.
